Puffy under eye bags are natural, and sometimes, even when you’re well-rested, they can still show up. With some small, gentle changes, you can make a noticeable difference in how the under-eye area looks and feels, to make your under-eye area look smoother, and less puffy.

What Causes Puffy Under Eye Bags?
Under-eye bags happen, as the tissue and muscles around the eyes weaken with age. Skin loses its elasticity, and the fat which normally supports the eyes, can shift forward, which creates a puffy or “baggy” appearance.
Fluid can collect under your eyes overnight, which is why puffy eyes can be more noticeable in the mornings. Salt, alcohol and a lack of sleep increases fluid retention, and worsens bags under the eyes.
Allergies and nasal congestion both trigger inflammation and swelling around your eyes. Plus, smoking, sun damage and rapid weight changes all affect skin quality, and circulation, increasing the visibility of eye bags and dark shadows.
Cold Compress Basics That Actually Help
Cold compresses reduce puffiness by constricting blood vessels and slowing fluid buildup under your eyes. Apply gentle pressure, to improve the circulation, and help swollen tissues to settle faster.
You can use a clean cloth that has been soaked in cold water, a gel eye mask that has been chilled in the fridge, or cold tea bags (black or green tea). The tannins and mild caffeine in cooled tea, add a slight anti-inflammatory effect, while the cold constricts blood vessels.
Keep the compresses on for 5 to 10 minutes, to avoid skin irritation. Repeat every hour as needed, and always press gently, without rubbing or tugging the delicate under-eye skin.
Chilled Spoons And Other Easy Cooling Tricks
Cold reduces swelling by constricting blood vessels, and slowing fluid buildup. Using a quick cooling treatment can visibly reduce under-eye puffiness within minutes.
For the chilled spoon method, place two clean metal teaspoons in your freezer, for 10 to 15 minutes. Hold the rounded side of the spoon against your under-eye area, for 1-3 minutes per eye, repeating as needed.
Cucumber slices are super effective, as they combine cooling and mild hydration all-in-one. Chill thin cucumber slices for 10 to 15 minutes, then rest them over your closed eyes for 5 to 10 minutes.
Cucumber is nice and gentle on the skin, whilst also soothing irritation, and giving you a cooling effect.
Gentle Under Eye Massage To Move Fluid
Gentle under eye massage helps to reduce under-eye puffiness, by encouraging lymphatic drainage and improving circulation. You can do it daily, in the morning, or after eating salty meals, to help move trapped fluid.
Use clean fingers, or a chilled jade roller with light pressure, as the skin is delicate. Start at the inner corner of your eye, and sweep outwards toward the temple, in slow and soft motions, for 30 to 60 seconds per side.
Place your ring finger on the inner corner, and gently press and glide along the orbital bone. Repeat 5 to 10 times, keeping your movements super light, to avoid stretching or bruising the skin.
With a jade roller, roll outward towards the nose, and along the under-eye area toward the temple, using the smaller end for precision.
